BMW M4 in Yas Marina Blue.

Usually when I put the boot on, I open it up all the way and just kind of stick it on the tire. On this one, the rear tire was so wide I had to angle the boot to get it on there before locking it.

Not that I’m under any obligation to do so, but I was pretty careful putting the boot on out of respect for the car. The city is pretty clear that they’re not liable for any damage done while booting or once the boot is on there, but that’s no reason to be a dick about it, right?

Probably the nicest car I've booted in my ten months on the job.

I’d recommend a Sawzall, easily the best tool to hack off a boot. Give me a Sawzall with a good blade and I'll have the boot off in two minutes.

So basically what would happen is that on top of the tickets you’d owe and the boot fee ($100), you’d get a $500 fee for the boot. Then the next time I see that car, I’m booting it and then waiting with it until a cop shows up so I can get it towed. I’ve done that a few times since I’ve been doing the job, and finding the car that somebody cut the boot off and towing it is basically the most satisfying thing in the world.

For some reason people never throw the boot away, 99% of the time it’s in the trunk of their car, which at least gets them off the hook for that $500 fee.

yeah, getting my truck turned into a giant paperweight is about the WORST thing that could happen. a matter of last thing i needed today..... so AFTER i remove the boot, and finish my buisness, can i then “settle up” and make the whole thing go away???? returning whats left of the boot, and paying the parking ticket, are there other tickets ?? say if i could settle up before i got found out?

Where I work, if you’ve gotten booted you’ve got a few tickets. I always tell people the thing to do is go to court and talk to the judge, 99 times out of 100 they’ll knock down the amount you owe and we’ll take off the boot.

Whether or not you want to remove the boot really depends on where you got booted. If it’s right in front of your house, you’d be crazy to rip it off because as soon as you rip it off I’m looking up your address and taking a ride by your house. If it’s a place you park frequently, don’t do it because I’m going to drive past that spot every day to try and get you, haha.

We’ve had people pay their tickets and then turn in the mangled boot and the court doesn't do anything about it. So yeah, you can rip it off and do your stuff, but the thing to do is talk to the judge before ripping it off because if you rip it off first, the judge is going to know you did and he won't be lenient.

Whoa wait a second. You (not you) can damage a wheel and the city isn’t liable? How is that possible? I get not being liable once it’s on, but if the wheel gets fucked up how is that fair? I get people need to pay their fines, but fucking up someone’s car seems unfair.

Unless I'm overreacting and you have the try and damage a wheel with a boot.

The boot is built to not hurt the wheel. Any parts of it that are designed to touch the wheel have rubber covers or a rubber pad, so 99 times out of 100 there’s no problem, and nobody is intentionally trying to scratch anybody’s wheels. On this car, the wheel is so large and shaped in such a way that a metal part of the boot would have been against the spokes, so I actually left it a little looser than I’d like so it didn’t touch.

The way the city figures it, it isn’t their fault the boot is being put on, the people should have paid their tickets (and you don’t get a boot instantly for getting a ticket, it takes 3 tickets that are a few months old) and that mistakes happen while booting, so they’re not holding us or themselves responsible for damage the person could have avoided by paying their tickets.

And anyway, most of the damage that happens happens when people try to rip the boot off but can’t.
